Preparation is where paint jobs are won or lost, and it is almost invisible in the finished result. A well-prepped wall looks the same on day one as a poorly prepped wall. The difference shows up in year two, when the unprepared surface starts to peel, chip, or show every flaw you painted over.

Why prep decides the paint job

Paint sticks through a mechanical and chemical bond to the surface. Four things get in the way of that bond:

  • Adhesion fails when the surface is too smooth or too dirty for the film to grip.
  • Gloss on old enamel or trim rejects new paint unless it is scuffed to give the film something to key into.
  • Contamination from grease, silicone, wax, or dust sits between paint and surface and causes peeling and fish-eyes.
  • Moisture in damp walls or uncured patches pushes paint off from underneath, causing bubbles and flaking.

Every step in the sequence exists to remove one of these four problems. That is why you cannot swap a cleaner surface for a longer sanding session: they are solving different failures.

The prep sequence

The order matters because each step sets up the next. Sand before you clean and you grind dirt into the surface. Prime before you dust and you seal dust into the film. Run the steps in this order:

  1. Clean

    Wash the surface to remove dirt, dust, and water-soluble grime. Degrease anywhere that sees kitchen grease, smoke, or hand contact.

  2. Repair

    Fill holes and cracks with spackle or wood filler, and scrape loose or peeling paint down to a sound edge before anything else.

  3. Sand

    Scuff the surface to the right profile, feather the edges of repairs, and knock down gloss so the new paint can grip.

  4. Dust

    Remove sanding dust with a tack cloth or a damp wipe and let it dry. Dust under the film is a peel waiting to happen.

  5. Prime

    Prime bare wood, repaired patches, stains, and any surface that needs sealing or stain blocking. Not every repaint needs a full prime.

  6. Paint

    Apply the finish only after the primer has cured to the product’s recoat window, then lay down your finish coats.

Sanding grits before painting

Grit is a number for how coarse the abrasive is: lower numbers cut faster and leave deeper scratches, higher numbers leave a finer finish. Use the coarsest grit that gets the job done, then step finer if the surface needs it. These are standard ranges, not test results:

Dust, degreasing and priming

Dust is the most common reason a paint job feels rough or the film lifts. After sanding, wipe the surface with a tack cloth or a barely damp rag and let it dry completely before priming or painting. Never paint over a dusty surface because the film bonds to the dust, not the wall.

Degreasing is a separate step from general cleaning, and it is the one kitchens, bathrooms, and cabinets demand. Grease survives ordinary washing and repels water-based paint. Use a purpose degreaser, rinse it fully, and let the surface dry before sanding. For cabinets, this step alone often decides whether the finish holds.

Priming is not always a full-coat job. Prime bare wood, fresh spackle and patched areas, stains, and drastic color changes. Spot-priming repairs is enough on an otherwise sound repaint. When you prime, follow the recoat window on the label before painting.
