Scope

This protocol covers the interior and exterior house paints we review for coverage, hide, finish, washability, and value. We focus on latex wall paints in flat through semi-gloss sheens, because that is what most homeowners actually roll onto walls, ceilings, and trim.

We buy every paint at retail from store shelves. Manufacturer-supplied samples are accepted only when disclosed, and they run through the identical procedure. We do not publish results for a product until it has completed the full test, and we do not claim properties we have not measured.

Two things are explicitly out of scope today. We do not yet publish years-long exterior weathering data, and we do not test industrial or automotive coatings. Equipment

Every paint test uses the same hardware so the only variable is the paint itself.

We record ambient conditions at the start and end of each session. Paint behaves differently in a hot, dry room than in a cool, damp one, so those numbers are part of the record, not an afterthought.

Sample preparation

Panels are primed with the same primer at the same coverage rate and allowed to dry for 24 hours in a temperature-controlled room. Once cured, each panel is conditioned at room temperature for at least 24 more hours before painting.

We label the back of each panel with a random code and keep the code key separate from the people who score the finished panels. The front of a panel never carries a brand name during testing. Paint is stirred according to the label, never thinned, and never doctored to improve flow.

For every product we log the batch and lot number, the purchase date, the price paid, the sheen, and the coverage estimate the manufacturer prints on the label. That label number is a reference point we check against our own measured coverage, not a score we assume is correct. A clean, well-prepped surface matters as much as the coating, which is why we hold surface preparation constant across every run.

Test method

Each product is applied in two full coats with a 9-inch roller, following the spread rate on the label where one is given and recording actual usage as we go.

  1. Apply the first coat and check wet-film thickness with the comb gauge at three points per panel.
  2. Allow the manufacturer’s stated recoat time, then apply the second coat the same way.
  3. Measure coverage in square feet per gallon to full hide over a contrast undercoat, recording the exact area painted when the old color is fully obscured.
  4. Check cure progress at the manufacturer’s stated dry and cure windows, noting tack, block resistance, and odor.
  5. Run washability on cured panels using a rub-cycle scrub test with a nylon brush and standardized scrubbing medium, plus a common household stain set.
  6. Measure sheen with the gloss meter at two angles and inspect the dried film for leveling, roller stipple, sags, and spatter under fixed lighting.

The scrub test counts rub cycles, not a brand’s marketing claim. We report both the cycle count at first visible wear and the condition of the film after a fixed number of cycles, so a paint that cleans easily and one that merely hides dirt are scored differently.

Wet-film thickness and coverage are recorded per coat. If a product needs a third coat to reach full hide on our standard panel, that is part of its result, not a reason to adjust the panel.

Scoring

Two people score each finished panel independently, without seeing the brand name, on a 0-10 scale for each criterion. A 10 is not perfection; it is the best we have measured in the category so far.

The weighted total becomes the product’s score, and the written review explains why each criterion scored the way it did. A paint that is cheap per gallon but spreads poorly can still lose on value, because value is cost per finished square foot, not cost per can.

Repeatability

We paint three panels per product from the same can, on the same day, by the same operator. The three runs are randomized across the batch so no product always goes first or last.

We report the mean of the three panels. If the spread between panels is wider than our threshold, we re-run the product rather than publishing a number we cannot trust. Repeatability also applies to the people scoring: the two blind scorers must be within one point before a criterion is locked, and a disagreement triggers a re-read against the photo record.

Limitations

Our bench results describe a controlled room, not your house. Real walls have different substrates, past repairs, texture, and lighting, and your technique and conditions will differ from ours.

We apply with a roller only, so our finish scores do not capture how a product sprays or brushes. We test the base and a standard tint, but a very dark or very saturated colorant can change a paint’s behavior. Most importantly, we have not yet completed years-long exterior weathering, so we do not publish a multi-year durability claim until our outdoor panels have the time behind them to support one.
